LoCloud – enabling the promotion of digital collections of small heritage institutions
The main goal of this large international project was to use cloud technology to enable smaller institutions in charge of preserving cultural heritage to create their digital collections and make them visible through Europeana. The project was particularly aimed at smaller heritage institutions that don’t have the technical capacity or human resources to build their digital collections. The project envisaged that by forming these local collections, around 4 million new objects would be added to the European collection during the three years of the project, from March 2013 to March 2016. The project coordinator was Norsk Kulturrad from Oslo (State Archives of Norway) with the help of MDR Partners from London. BCL was one of 33 partners from 23 European countries.
As part of the project, a help centre was created – the complete online support related to digitization was created: various documentation, e-courses, a help desk, a question and answer database, etc. The BCL itself, considering that it already had its developed digital library, created a collection of photos from cultural and educational programs as part of the Cloud project.
